  OSU Equine Studies: Facilities: Breaking and Training FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - BREAKING & TRAINING

  1. When is Animal Science 271- Breaking & Training offered at OSU?
    Breaking & Training is offered during the Winter Quarter at The Ohio State University Horse Center located at 3658 Kays Avenue, Dublin, Ohio.

  2. How do I enroll my horse(s) in AS 271 Breaking & Training?
    To check class availability, contact the Horse Center at 614.459.4208.

  3. What is the cost of this service?
    Boarding and Training fees are $450 per month for the term of the agreement unless the contract is terminated earlier via certified mail to the Horse Center 30 days prior to the termination date.

  4. When are these fees paid?
    Boarding and Training fees will be due on the 1st day of each month or upon arrival of the horse to the Horse Center. Payments for partial months will be charged a daily rate which assumes a month has 30 days. A $25 late fee will be assessed if payment is not received by the 3rd of the month. Checks should be made payable to The Ohio State University and mailed or delivered to:

  5. What does "training of the horse" consist of?
    The horse will be used by the University for teaching purposes for the AS 271 Breaking & Training course. Training shall consist of lunging, ground driving, saddling and riding. At the completion of the training period, the University will demonstrate to the Owner a "green broke" horse which is defined as a horse that will walk, jog/trot, lope/canter both directions and stop and back while under saddle. Any other training must be requested by the owner or agent and approved by the University's teaching faculty or staff.

  6. What type of care will be provided to my horse(s) while enrolled in Breaking & Training?
    The University will provide quality care for your horse which includes a 10'x12' stall, hay and grain twice a day, free choice minerals and water, daily stall cleaning and bedding as needed.

  7. What are my responsibilities as the horse owner/agent when my horse(s) are at OSU?
    The Owner is responsible for all farrier and/or veterinary care, including the scheduling of vaccinations, deworming and farrier care. The Owner warrants that he/she owns the horse(s) or is an agent for the Owner of the horse and at the time of delivery to the University the horse(s) are free from infectious, contagious transmissible diseases. The Owner agrees to provide the University with proof of a current (within one year) Negative Coggins and a certificate of inoculation for influenza, rhinopneumonitis and strangles. A series of 2 influenza, rhinopneumonitis and strangles vaccinations must be administered to the horse with the second vaccination being administered within 30 days prior to arrival for training.

  8. What if there is an emergency involving my horse(s) while at OSU?
    If the University determines that the horse(s) need emergency care, the University will attempt to contact the Owner. In the event the University is unable to contact the Owner, the University will contact your primary veterinarian. In the unfortunate event the University is unsuccessful in reaching either the Owner or the primary veterinarian, the University has the authority to secure emergency veterinary care. The Owner will be responsible for paying all costs related to the medical injury and/or care. The Owner also shall bear all risk of loss from injury, sickness or death of his/her horse unless such loss is caused by negligence or intentional acts or omissions of the University, its Animal Science Department, and its employees and agents, while they are acting within the scope of their employment or agency.

  9. Can I visit the Horse Center while my horse(s) are in training?
    The Owner has the right to visit the Horse Center and should schedule visits around the University's training, teaching, extension education and research activities. The Owner must also abide by the rules and regulations of the University and its University Horse Center.

  10. Where is the Horse Center located?
    The Ohio State University Horse Center is located at 3658 Kays Avenue, Dublin, OH, only minutes away from main campus in the northwest area of Columbus. Take I-270 to Sawmill Road exit and head south. Our facility is located only 2 minutes south of the freeway on the east side of Sawmill Road. Look for the Don Scott Livestock Center sign.

    If you are visiting from the OSU Campus, take 315 north to Bethel Road exit. Turn left onto Bethel Road. Follow road to Sawmill Road. Turn right on Sawmill and go through two traffic lights. The Horse Center will be on your right.
